Taking the perfect selfie is truly an art form and something you might need to work at, especially if you’re using the photo as a professional headshot or your LinkedIn profile pic. So before you extend that arm and start snapping away, here are a few tips to help you get a selfie that truly shines (selfie stick not required).
Find the right light
Light can either be your best friend or worst enemy – you just have to know how to work with it. Flooding your face with natural light, either outside or through a window, can hide imperfections better than any makeup or face cream ever will. And it’s free! Just make sure to watch out for shadows on your face, especially under the eyes. Pro tip: The low light during sunrise and sunset make those the best times to take photos outside.
Don’t be fake
A real smile can make almost any selfie look good. Think of something funny or someone special to you (depending on the mood you’re going for), close your eyes and open them right before you take the photo. Your expression will be fresh and authentic. No forced “smizing” or duck lips. Please.
Take a ton of photos. Then take some more
Find your light, get yourself ready, and then keep snapping until your arm falls off! For real, if you take 100 (or 500) selfies while experimenting with different angles, expressions etc., one of them is bound to be good! It never hurts to have options.
Find an app or filter you love
In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need filters… but it’s pretty clear that’s not our reality. So maybe you’ve got circles under your eyes or coffee-stained teeth (sounds like someone needs some sleep) – no problem! That’s what editing and filters are for. Some of our favorites for selfies are Facetune and VSCO. The Valencia filter on Instagram also works wonders.
Get ready for your close-up
Your face is the focus of any selfie, so make sure it’s on point! A Face Wax will help ensure smooth, glowing skin, and a Brow Wax & Tint and Lash Lift & Tint are total game changers. In fact, after a visit to Waxxpot, you might not even need a filter!
